ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico baseball team used a seven-run third inning to defeat Utah 10-5 this afternoon at Lobo Field. With the loss, the Utes fall to 19-22 overall and 6-12 in the Mountain West Conference.
Sophomore Clay Westmoreland suffered the loss, falling to 4-4 on the season. He gave up eight runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings.
After the Lobos scored in the first on an RBI-single, junior Eric Chevalier tied it at one apiece in the top of the second with a solo homer.
New Mexico then broke away in the third, scoring seven runs off a home run, two singles, a double and a triple.
After two scoreless innings, the Utes got back into it in the top of the sixth when Chevalier cracked a three-run homer, bringing the score to 8-4.
The Lobos came right back with a long ball of their own, scoring two more runs.
Utah plated its final run in the ninth when junior Jared Pena scored on an error by the New Mexico shortstop.
Chevalier finished the game 2-for-5 with two homers and four RBI. Three other Utes -- juniors Cort Wilson, Mike Westfall and Pena -- had multi-hit games, each getting two hits.

The Utes and Lobos play game two of the series at 1 p.m. tomorrow, April 26, at Lobo Field.
