Baseball Drops Game Two to New Mexico

ALBEQUERQUE, N.M. - After leading for the first five innings, the Utah baseball team gave up seven runs in the sixth, losing at New Mexico 14-6 in game two of the series. The Utes drop to 19-23 overall and 6-13 in the Mountain West Conference.
After pitching five scoreless innings, sophomore Doug Mackay took the loss, falling to 4-4 on the year. He pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits.
Utah took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first when junior Jared Pena scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Eric Chevalier. Sophomore Matt Ciaramella then hit a solo homer to put the Utes up 2-0.
The Utes struck again in the third, when Ciaramella scored on a junior Mike Westfall double and Chevalier plated Westfall on a base hit.
Things then fell apart for Utah in the sixth when the Lobos scored seven runs on an error, two RBI-singles, an RBI-double, a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run.
The Utes cut the New Mexico lead to two, 7-5, in the top of the seventh when Ciaramella drove in Pena on a single.
The Lobos, however, came right back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh on another two-run long ball and a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 10-5.
New Mexico added to its lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, followed by a three-run homer, going up 14-5.
Westfall tried to keep the Utes in it in the ninth with a solo homer, but it wasn't enough.
Ciaramella finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two more driven in, while Westfall was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Chevalier went 2-for-5 with one RBI.
