SALT LAKE CITY - Despite 13 strikeouts by the Utah pitching staff, the Utes fell to San Diego State 5-3 in the first of two games at Franklin Covey Field today. With the loss, Utah falls to 18-19 overall and 6-10 in Mountain West Conference play.
Sophomore Doug Mackay (4-3) took the loss, pitching 6 1/3 innings and striking out a career-high eight batters. He gave up five runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits.
Freshman Jason Price threw 2 2/3 innings of near perfect relief, giving up no hits and striking out five.
San Diego State got on the board first, scoring two runs in the second off a triple and a double.
The Utes answered in the bottom of the second when sophomore Brett Sundberg homered to left center, making it 2-1.
After two scoreless innings, the Aztecs struck again in the after stringing together three base hits. Then, in the top of the seventh, they plated two more on an RBI-double and an error, making it 5-1.
Utah came back with runs in the seventh and eighth, one on a double and the other on a ground out, narrowing the lead to two, 5-3, but that was as close as they would get.
Senior Wick Udy and freshman Matt Anderson each finished 2-for-4.

The Utes and Aztecs close out the series this afternoon at 1:30 p.m., at Franklin Covey Field.
