SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team (16-17, 4-8) fell 9-4 to league-leader UNLV (27-10, 11-2) at Franklin Covey Field this afternoon. The Utes left seven men stranded in a game that saw them lead 4-3 through six innings.
Sophomore Clay Westmoreland (3-3) suffered the loss, pitching 6 1/3 innings. He gave up five runs on four hits while striking out four.
UNLV took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Utah came right back with two-run double by senior Mike Basham.
The Rebels took the lead back, 3-2, in the third with two runs off a double and a ground out to second.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth, the Utes plated two in the bottom of the sixth when junior Mike Westfall homered to left field, putting Utah up 4-3.
UNLV took the lead for good in the top of the seventh on a two-run single. The Rebels put it away in the eighth with four runs on three hits.
Westfall went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while sophomore Matt Ciaramella was 2-for-4 with one run. Basham finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs driven in.
UP NEXT:
The two teams play game two of the three-game series at noon tomorrow, April 11, at Franklin Covey Field.
