Utah Baseball Swept by BYU in Three-Game Series

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team fell 10-5 to BYU in the final game of the series, dropping all three games to the Cougars. With the loss, the Utes fall to 11-15 overall and 2-7 in the Mountain West Conference.
Utah scored just five runs on 11 hits, leaving nine on base. BYU, meanwhile, scored 10 runs off 11 hits.
The Cougars jumped ahead early and never looked back, leading throughout the game. BYU scored two runs in the first and three in both the third and fifth to jump out to an 8-0 lead.
Utah managed one run in the bottom of the fifth when junior Eric Chevalier reached on a single, stole second, then scored, unearned, on an error by the BYU third baseman.
The Utes scored again in the sixth when sophomores Brett Sundberg and Matt Ciaramella both singled and senior Jake Jordison reached on a base on balls, loading the bases. After a pitching change, Chevalier was hit by a pitch, bringing Sundberg home and making it 8-2.
After a scoreless seventh, Utah struck again in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by senior Wick Udy.
BYU added to its lead in the ninth on a two-run homer by pinch hitter Clayton Carson.
Freshman Tyler Kmetko doubled down the right field line in the bottom of the ninth, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Ciaramella for the final Utah run.
Sophomore Doug Mackay (2-2) took the loss on the mound, pitching 4 1/3 innings and giving up eight runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out three.
Udy was 1-for-1 with two RBI, while Jordison and junior Jared Pena both went 2-for-4. Jordison also scored a run.
