SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team (11-13, 2-5) dropped game one of the three-game series with Brigham Young (8-14, 3-4) by the score of 9-5 tonight. The game was resumed with one out in the top of the third after being called last night due to snow.

With BYU up 4-2, the Utes got on the board first tonight in the bottom of the third when junior Jared Pena tripled to center field and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by senior Wick Udy.

Utah then took the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Matt Ciaramella scored on a wild pitch and junior Eric Chevalier reached home on a Cort Wilson base hit.

The Cougars responded with a two-run double in the top of the fifth the regain the lead for good. BYU added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth for the 9-5 victory.

Freshman Derek Larsen took the loss for Utah, falling to 2-2 on the season. He pitched five innings, giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out three batters.

Udy, who was recently named to the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Senior Mike Basham was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Yesterday, with two outs in the first, BYU scored three runs off two base hits, two walks and a double.

Utah answered in the bottom of the second when Ciaramella singled to right field and advanced to second when Chevalier reached on a base on balls. Basham then tripled, driving in two runs.

Just before the game was called, the Cougars scored again when the lead-off batter walked and was brought home on a double by Kainoa Obrey.
