SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team closed out its home series against New Mexico with an 11-6 loss today at Franklin Covey Field. With the loss, the Utes fall to 11-12 overall and 2-4 in Mountain West Conference play.
Sophomore Doug Mackay suffered the loss on the mound, pitching six innings and giving up five runs on six hits. He struck out seven batters.
Three other Utah pitchers, Jason Price, Derek Larsen and Ben Buck, combined for the other three innings, giving up eight hits and six runs, four of which were earned.
New Mexico, which led throughout, scored two runs in the first.
The Utes countered with one in the bottom of the third inning when senior Mike Basham doubled, stole third and was brought home on a base hit by junior Jared Pena.
The Lobos scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings, one on a single and the other on a triple.
Utah scored again in the bottom of the sixth when Pena homered, bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of New Mexico.
The Lobos brought three home in the seventh on five base hits.
Sophomore Brett Sundberg sacrifice flied in sophomore Matt Ciaramella in the bottom of the seventh, narrowing the New Mexico lead to four. However, the Lobos scored three more in the eighth to take a 10-3 lead.
The Utes answered with a two-run Ryan Khoury homer, followed by three singles, which brought in another run and brought the score to 10-6.
New Mexico sealed the win in the ninth with a solo homer on the offensive end and three straight outs on the defensive end.
Pena went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored, while senior Wick Udy was 2-for-4 and scored one run. Sundberg and Khoury drove in two runs apiece.
UP NEXT: The Utes host in-state rival Brigham Young for a three-game series next Thursday-Saturday, March 26-28, at Franklin Covey Field.
