Utah Baseball Drops Conference Home Opener

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team dropped its conference home opener today at Franklin Covey Field 12-2 to New Mexico. With the loss, the Utes fall to 10-11 on the season and 1-3 in Mountain West Conference play.
Junior Sean Overholt (0-3) took the loss for the Utes, pitching six complete innings and giving up six runs on 11 hits. He struck out five batters.
New Mexico's Jamie Vermilyea pitched the entire game, giving up just two runs on eight Utah hits while striking out nine.
With two outs in the top of the first, the Lobos scored three runs on three singles and a double. They made it 4-0 in the top of the third on a one-run double.
The Utes scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth when junior Eric Chevalier doubled, reached third on a Mike Westfall ground out and came home on a base hit by junior Jared Pena. Freshman Ryan Khoury, who reached on an error by the Lobo third baseman, scored on a double by junior Cort Wilson.
The Lobos added two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, then topped it off with four runs in the top of the ninth.
