SALT LAKE CITY - In cold, sometimes driving rain, the Utah baseball team managed just five hits in game two of a twinbill this afternoon at Ute Field, falling to Mesa State 5-4.

Utah got on the board in the bottom of the first when senior Mike Basham singled, then advanced to third on a throwing error by the Mesa State pitcher. Junior Eric Chevalier then grounded out to the short stop, but drove in Basham.

The Mavericks caught fire in the top of the second, scoring four runs off four hits to take a 4-1 lead.

The Utes struck again in the fourth with senior Jake Jordison and junior Mike Westfall both walking and advancing on passed balls. Nate Schlieman then reached on an error by the short stop and Jordison scored. Freshman Matt Anderson then brought Westfall home on a sacrifice fly, bringing Utah within one, 4-3.

Utah tied it in the fifth when Jordison hit a solo home run, his second of the day.

Mesa State got the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-double.

The Utes tried to mount a comeback, but Anderson was called out a home in the bottom of the sixth and Utah fell short.

Freshman Ryan Florence took the loss on the mound, pitching four innings and giving up four runs on six hits while striking out three batters.

Junior Sean Overholt closed the game for the Utes, throwing two innings, allowing two hits and no runs. He also struck out four.

Jordison was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Wilson and Schlieman both went 1-for-2 on the game.

The Utes host New Mexico for a three-game series this weekend at Franklin Covey Field. On Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22, Utah faces the Lobos at 2 p.m. On Sunday, March 23, game time is 1 p.m.
