GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The University of Utah baseball team fell to 0-2 on the season with an 8-5 loss to Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo., this afternoon.
Utah scored in the first inning after senior Mike Basham walked and stole second. Sophomore Matt Ciaramella then singled, driving in Basham.
In the third, Utah took a 2-0 lead when sophomore Brett Sundberg homered to center field.
The fifth inning was disastrous for Utah as the Mavericks scored five runs on two doubles, three triples and two walks. Mesa State scored again in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-2 lead.
The Utes scored in the top of the ninth on another Sundberg home run, but it wasn't enough and Mesa State got the win.
Sophomore Clay Westmoreland took the loss on the mound. He pitched four innings, striking out six.
The series concludes tomorrow, Feb. 9, at noon.
