GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The University of Utah baseball team picked up its first win of the season today with a 4-2 victory over Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo. With the win, the Utes improve to 1-2 on the season.

"Once again, we played solid defense and had great pitching," Head Coach Tim Esmay said. "The difference today was that we had timely hitting late in the game."

Mesa State Utah scored one run in both the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.

The Utes took got on the board in the top of the sixth, when junior Mike Westfall singled, driving in sophomore Matt Ciaramella, who reached on a fielder's choice.

When junior transfer Eric Chevalier singled to left field on the next at-bat, the bases were loaded. Senior Brandon Biesinger then doubled, bringing senior Jake Jordison and Westfall home and giving Utah a 3-2 advantage.

The Utes scored again in the seventh when sophomore T.R. Gourley doubled, stole third and scored on an error by the Maverick catcher.

Gourley finished the day 2-for-5, while Biesinger was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Jordison was also 2-for-3 and Westfall, who was 1-for-4 on the day, drove in one run and scored another.

Sophomore Doug Mackay got the start on the mound, pitching four innings and striking out five. But it was junior newcomer Ben Buck who picked up the win, throwing 1.1 innings and giving up just one hit.

The Utes travel to Northridge, Calif., where they will play three games at Cal State Northridge next Friday-Sunday, Feb. 14-16. Friday's contest starts at 2 p.m., while the Saturday and Sunday games begin at 1 p.m.
