COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Utah sophomore hurler Clay Westmoreland gave up just two hits in the team's 4-1 victory over No. 19 Texas A&M at the Domino's Pizza Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas, tonight. Utah is now 5-3 on the season.
Westmoreland allowed just one run in five innings of work to improve to 1-1 on the season. He also struck out four batters. Junior Ben Buck closed out the last two innings, allowing no hits and earning his second save of the season.
"Once again, it was a great outing by the pitching staff," Head Coach Tim Esmay said. "That strong pitching, combined with very good defense and aggressive hitting got us this win. Our hitters were finally able to string hits together tonight."
Texas A&M scored first in the fourth, plating one, but Utah answered with three runs of its own. Senior Brandon Biesinger singled to center field, driving in sophomores Matt Ciaramella and Brett Sundberg. Junior Eric Chevalier then singled and drove in junior Mike Westfall, to put Utah up 3-1.
The Utes struck again in the bottom of the sixth when Biesinger again singled, bringing short stop Cort Wilson home.
Both Biesinger and Chevalier went 2-for-3 with two RBI on the game.
