SALT LAKE CITY - No. 17 Utah claimed its first outright regular-season Mountain West Conference women's soccer title with a 1-0 overtime win over BYU Saturday. The victory over the Cougars earned the Utes (15-2-0 overall, 6-0-0 MWC) the No. 1 seed in this week's MWC Women's Soccer Championship, which takes place Wednesday through Saturday at Ute Field.
BYU and Wyoming tied for second-place in the conference with 4-2-0 records. The Cougars (12-5-2 overall) will get the second seed based on beating the Cowgirls (No. 3 seed) 5-1 during the regular season. San Diego State claims the fourth seed, posting a 2-3-1 league record, while UNLV finished in fifth place with 2-4-0 mark. New Mexico will get the sixth seed with its 1-4-1 conference record. The seventh seed will go to Air Force, which finished with a 1-5-0 record.
The quarterfinal matches on Wednesday will feature BYU (No. 2) taking on Air Force (No. 7) at 9:00 a.m., Wyoming (No. 3) vs. New Mexico (No. 6) at 11:30 a.m., and San Diego State (No. 4) vs. UNLV (No. 5) at 2:00 p.m.
Utah will receive a first round bye and play the winner of San Diego State vs. UNLV in the semifinals on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. The other semifinal match is set for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship match is slated for noon on Saturday with the winner receiving an automatic bid into the 2003 NCAA Women's College Cup.
