SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Amber Brower and Bobbie Benegas scored second-half goals to push Utah past San Diego State 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Utes, ranked 19th in the NSCAA/adidas poll, won their fourth straight to improve to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the Mountain West Conference to maintain sole possession of first place.
After a scoreless first half in which Utah got off only four shots to three for San Diego State (6-8-1, 1-2 MWC) the Utes got a goal off a cleared corner in the 59th minute. Amanda Feigt got the ball to Brower, who dribbled the ball and split the defense to get the shot away from close range.
Utah got its second goal from Benegas in the 83rd minute. The senior collected the ball near midfield, dribbled through the defense and fired a shot from 10 yards away. Utah's defense stepped up with a solid performance. Tracy Stratton dominated the midfield area and goalkeeper Ashley Mason, playing the entire 90 minutes, had to make just two saves. It was Mason's third complete-game shutout of the season and the eighth for Utah in 15 games this season. The Utes finished with 12 shots on goal to the Aztecs' eight and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Utah returns home to host Wyoming in Mountain West Conference play next Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
