U.S.A.F.A., Colo--Utah defeated Air Force on Friday afternoon at Falcon Field, 12-10, to move to 31-23, 15-13 on the year. The Falcons fall to 26-25, 13-14 on the season and a full-game behind the Utes in a tight conference race. The two teams play game two later this afternoon and game three on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (MT).
Utah struck first in the game after Nate Weese knocked out his league-leading 16th home run of the season to score himself and Donnie Saba, 2-0. Saba scored again in the third after Mike Westfall connected for a single to center field. Then it was Weese crossing the plate for the second time off an Air Force error, 4-0. The Falcons fought back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4 lead.
The lead didn't last long, as the Utes posted three, two, one in the fourth, fifth and six innings to build a 10-5 margin. Air Force chipped away in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to cut it to a 10-8 ball game. In the seventh, Utah posted another run after Jared Snyder, who led off the inning with a triple, scored on a sac fly by Matt Ciaramella, 11-8. A Falcon home run and sac fly in the eighth helped Air Force chip away again and cut it to a one-run game, 11-10. But the Utes added an insurance run in the ninth off a Saba sac fly, and then held the Falcons in the latter of the inning to get the 12-10 victory.
On the mound for Utah, Jason Wylie picks up the win after throwing 5.1 innings. Wylie struck out seven, while allowing eight runs to improve to 6-7 on the season. Mitch Maio earns his fifth save of the season. It was Maio's ninth career save to tie him for the Ute career record.
At the plate, Ciaramella continued his hot bat by connecting on 4-of-5 chances with two RBI and one run scored. Weese, Castleton, and Westfall each drove in two runs, while Saba scored three.
