U.S.A.F.A., Colo.--Utah cruised to a 22-5 victory over Air Force in game two of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Falcon Field. The win ensures the Utes at least a tie for second place in the conference standings. If Utah sweeps Air Force, they will finish in second by themselves. The two teams play the rubber match on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (MT). With the win, Utah improves to 16-13 in league play, 32-23 overall. The 32 wins is the second-most in school history since 1963. Air Force falls to 13-15 in conference games and 26-26 overall.
Nine Air Force errors and 18 Utah hits contributed to 22 Utah runs in the game. Just like in the first game Utah began its offense with a two-run home run, this time by Jake Jordison, 2-0. Then in the top of the fourth, Utah unleashed seven runs off seven hits and three Air Force errors. Donnie Saba knocked in two of the runs with a single to center field.
Air Force posted its first runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 9-2 score. A two-run double in the sixth by Mike Westfall scored Adam Castleton and Nate Weese, 11-2. Westfall would then advance to third and score on two wild pitches, 12-2. Air Force notched two more runs in the bottom of the inning, only to be answered by two more Ute runs in the top of the seventh, 14-4. With a 16-5 lead, Utah comprised another big-run inning with six in the ninth to make it a 22-5 final. A homer by Castleton accounted for three of those runs.
Castleton finished with four RBI in the game and three runs scored off two hits, including a triple and home run, and three walks. Westfall was 3-of-6 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI. All but one Utah starter had at least one hit, and sub Brandon Biesinger came in and connected on 3-of-5 chances with three RBI and three runs scored. Biesinger smacked out his second home run of the season in the seventh.
Cheyenne Rushton hurled a complete game to improve to 8-5 on the year. Rushton allowed five runs (four earned), while striking out six and walking none.
