PROVO, Utah? The Utes unloaded twelve runs in the first inning en route to a 17-3 win over BYU on Friday night at Miller Field. Utah improves to 5-6 in conference play and 20-15 overall. The Cougars drop to 6-4 in league games and 12-17 overall. The rubber game is on Saturday, with the series tied at one game apiece.
The game started with a barrage of offense by Utah, including an end of inning total reading 12 runs off nine hits and two errors. Matt Ciaramella kicked things off for the Utes with a lead off double to right field and then scored on a two-base shot by Donnie Saba to center. The next batter up, Adam Castleton, was hit by a pitch to take first and Nate Weese followed up with a single bunt to third to load the bases. Castleton and Saba then scored on a double to left center by Brit Pannier to make it a 3-0 game. The Utes added two more when Weese and Pannier scored on a single to center by Mike Westfall. With a 5-0 lead, Utah scored seven more runs off two walks and a couple of RBI singles, including another two-run shot by Westfall to make it a 12-0 lead.
The Utes extended their 16-game hitting streak in which a home run has been hit to 17 games after Donald Hawes knocked one over the wall in left center in the fourth (13-1). Brit Pannier smacked his second double of the game in the fifth to score Adam Castleton, who had reached base earlier after being hit by a pitch. Later that inning, Pannier scored on a fielder?s choice by Mike Basham to make it a 15-1 game. The Cougars scored their second run of the game in the sixth off two Ute errors for a 15-2 score. In the Utah eighth, Donnie Saba hit his second double of the game for an RBI and Jake Jordison also ripped an RBI double as a pinch hitter to make it a 17-2 game. BYU added one more in the bottom of the ninth to create the final score of 17-3.
Cheyenne Rushton (5-2) pitched a great game, even with a 12-run spot. The senior right hander scattered ten hits and allowed just three runs (two earned) in the complete game effort to earn his fifth win. Ryan Adams is credited with the loss for BYU after giving up eight runs in zero plus innings.
Pannier and Westfall led Utah with four RBI each. Pannier finished the night 2-of-3 at the plate, including two doubles with three runs scored. Westfall knocked in his four runs in the first, and scored once himself. Saba scored three runs and knocked in three off two hits and Matt Ciaramella added three hits for the Utes. Castleton set one of the more painful conference records after being hit by a pitch three times in the game.
