PROVO, Utah-What looked to be a win through seven innings of play, turned out to be an extra-inning heartbreaker for the Utes as they dropped game three to the Cougars, 10-9 on early Sunday morning. The 12-inning match up proved an exciting one for both sides' fans, but ended up in BYU's favor to improve the Cougars to 7-4 in conference play, 13-17-1 overall. Utah drops to 5-7 in league action and 20-16 overall.
Utah jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after Donnie Saba blasted a shot over the center field wall. The Cougars responded with two runs of their own in the second to take their first lead, 2-1. The third inning proved to be interesting for Utah, as it scored two runs off no hits. The inning began when Brit Pannier reached on a fielding error and then Mike Westfall and Mike Basham reached after being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pannier then crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jared Snyder. The next batter, Brett Baldwin ripped a groundout to second that scored Westfall and put the Utes up 3-2.
In the Utah third, back-to-back doubles opened up a three-run inning for the Utes. After bringing home Saba on his own double, Pannier went on to score after Westfall nailed a triple off the left field wall. Westfall then scored on a single up the middle by Basham, making it a 6-2 lead. The Cougars snuck up on the lead in the fourth with two runs off two of their 21singles in the game (6-4). Utah extended the lead to 7-4 in the fifth when Westfall scored on single by Snyder, and then doubled the Cougars' score in the sixth after Saba, who had reached on his second double of the game, scored on a single by Adam Castleton.
The Cougars added two more in the sixth off a two-run single to make it an 8-6 game. In the seventh, BYU scored another run, this time on a Ute error to cut it to a one run lead, 8-7. Then in the bottom of the eighth, the Cougars regained the lead after a single scored two runs (9-8). But the Utes didn't give up, scoring the tying run off back-to-back doubles by Nate Weese and Pannier (9-9). The Cougars were then retired one, two, three in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
Utah used a great catch by the third baseman Westfall to leave the winning run stranded on third in the bottom of the 10th. Utah has its best chance in the 11th after Westfall was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch with no outs. But the next three Utes couldn't bring him home, leaving the score tied at nine apiece.
The Utes found themselves in a jam in the bottom of the 12th with the bases loaded and no outs, Brett Baldwin came up with two great defensive plays. The first was a diving snag on a line drive and the second a throw to home after the hit ball bounced off the pitcher's glove, to leave the bases loaded with two outs. The next batter up went up on the pitcher, Snyder, 3-0 in the count, and eventually scored on a debatable called ball four to give BYU the victory.
For the Utes, Mitch Maio started the game, but gets a no decision. Maio threw 6.2 innings, while allowing seven runs (six earned) off 16 hits, including several slow rollers. Snyder, who caught the first eight innings, turned around and threw 3.2 scoreless innings in relief for Utah, but gets the loss after walking in the winning run to drop to 1-1 on the season.
Saba led Utah's plate attack, going 4-of-6 with three runs scored and an RBI. The junior ripped a home run, two doubles and a single to miss hitting for the cycle by a triple. Snyder added three hits for Utah to drive in two, while Brit Pannier's two doubles also scored two.
Leading the Cougars, were Rob Itri and Ryan Chambers, who finished with three RBI each. Tyler Dabo picks up his first win after throwing 3.2 scoreless innings, while striking out three.
