Cedar City, Utah - The University of Utah softball team ended a six-game win streak with a 5-4 extra inning loss to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in a non-conference match-up in Cedar City, Utah on Wed., Apr. 24. Utah moves to 23-32 overall, 7-3 in MWC play. Southern Utah improves to 22-25 on the season.
Utah jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first frame when senior Molly McLean came home on an SUU miscue and Lyndsey Trevis scored on back-to-back doubles by Melissa Stahnke and Trevis. The Utes tacked on an additional run to extends its lead to 3-0 in the third inning when junior Niki Hayhurst singled in Trevis. Utah stretched its lead to 4-0 in the fourth frame when senior Michele Larsen scored on a Christa Pfeninger single to right field.
The T-Birds broke out the bats in the fifth inning to knot the score 4-4. Amanda Whittaker opened up SUU scoring with an RBI-single to center field that plated April Cox. Rulen Andrade then recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice that allowed Kimberly Tillery to score followed by an RBI-single to right field by Lacee LePrey to drive home Whittaker. The 'Birds concluded scoring in the inning when Anna Leeman brought home Precious Gallo on a ground out.
The Utes loaded the bases in the eighth inning with no outs before SUU put LePrey (13-10) in the circle. LePrey forced Kelsie Lewis into a double play and struck out Pfeninger to end the inning.
Leeman proved to be the offensive hero of the day for the Thunderbirds as she brought home Andrade, placed at second because of the international tie breaker, with a single up the middle to capture the 5-4 win. Heather Bowlin (10-16) took the loss for the Utes.
UP NEXT: On Sat., Apr. 27, the Utes will play in-state rival BYU in Provo, Utah (DH) at 12:00 p.m. Utah travels to Albuquerque, N.M. on Fri., May 3, facing New Mexico in a doubleheader match-up at 1:00 p.m. On Sun., May 5, the Utes will take on the Colorado State Rams at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Collins, Colo (DH). The Utes will host the Utah State Aggies in a non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m. on Tues., May 7. On Thurs.-Sat. May 9-11, Utah will participate in the MWC Tournament held in Provo, Utah.
