SALT LAKE CITY-The Utes scored all four of their runs in the first inning, as they defeated Mesa State College, 4-2 in game two of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Utah (21-17) continues its homestand when it hosts Air Force in a three-game conference series starting this Friday.
Donnie Saba started things off for Utah, after drawing a walk and then advancing on a single by Nate Weese. The two runners went on to cross the plate after Brit Pannier smacked a single to center field, 2-0. Pannier and Mike Basham, who had walked, scored Utah's other two runs off a Jed Chrisman single through the middle, 4-0. The Mavericks cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth and one in the fifth, but couldn't top Utah's four on the scoreboard.
Doug Mackay (2-2) picks up his second win of the season after allowing two runs in a seven-inning complete game effort. The freshman hurler scattered five hits and struck out five in the game. Seven of Utah's starters had a hit in the game, including Saba who connected for two.
