SALT LAKE CITY--San Diego State smacked 20 hits and knocked in 16 runs as it rolled past Utah, 16-1 on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. The loss drops Utah to 17-13, 3-5 MWC and improves the Aztecs record to 22-10, 5-2 MWC. The rubber game will be played Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Aztecs scored two runs in the first inning after Chad Corona homered to left field, scoring Anthony Gywnn who had reached base earlier on an Ute error. Utah's Nate Weese cut the lead in half with a shot of his own over the right field wall to make it a 2-1 game. But what looked to be a close ball game early, turned into a trouncing by the Aztecs.
In the second, another Ute error kept the Aztecs alive in the inning as they went on to score two more runs and move to a 4-1 lead. San Diego State went on to score runs in the third, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings to build the 15-run lead.
Rory Shortell threw a great game for the Aztecs, giving up just four hits and one run in the complete game effort. Shortell struck out five batters and didn't allow multiple base runners until the eighth inning, when Utah stranded two.
For Utah, Nate Weese finished the day with a home run and a double. Brandon Biesinger smacked a pinch-hit double and Brett Baldwin connected for Utah's only other hit, a lead-off single in the third inning.
Cheyenne Rushton (4-2) records his second loss of the season after giving up eight runs (four earned) in 2.1 innings. Shortell moves to 5-2 on the year.
