Utah Grabs Game One From San Diego State, 5-3

SALT LAKE CITY--The Utes grabbed game one of their three-game conference series against San Diego State, 5-3, on Friday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. The win bumps Utah to 17-12, 3-4 MWC and drops the Aztecs to 21-10, 4-2 MWC. The two teams play again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Aztecs and their pitcher Chris Dunwell seemed to be on cruise control through the first five innings of Friday's game with a 3-1 lead. In fact, the only mistake Dunwell made through those innings was a home run ball to Utah lead-off hitter Adam Castleton. The Aztec pitcher allowed just one more hit in the second and then retired the side in the third, fourth and fifth innings. But in the sixth, the Ute bats came alive.
Donnie Saba started the sixth with a double to center field. Saba would later score after Brit Pannier knocked an RBI single through the left side that cut the lead to, 3-2.
In the Utah seventh, Mike Westfall singled to right center to begin the inning. Westfall would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Basham and then to third on a single by Matt Ciaramella. The next batter, senior Donald Hawes, ripped a shot over the right center wall to bring home Westfall and Ciaramella, and put the Utes up for good, 5-3.
Jason Wylie (4-4) picks up the win for Utah. Wylie gave up three runs off 10 hits, but forced the Aztecs to strand 12 runners in 7.2 innings of work. The junior also struck out four batters. Jared Snyder earns his second save after throwing 1.1 innings, while striking out two and walking one.
Hawes was the high RBI man for Utah with three off the home run. Saba finished with two doubles, while Ciaramella smacked two singles. Pannier and Castleton added an RBI apiece. Senior Nate Weese went hitless for the only the second game this season to end his hitting streak at 22 games.
Chris Dunwell (4-3) gets the loss for San Diego State after allowing five runs off seven hits in 6.1 innings. Jon Stephens connected for three hits to lead the Aztecs.
