SALT LAKE CITY--Utah defeated Southern Colorado, 9-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. The two wins over the Thunder Wolves move Utah to a perfect 4-0 in home games. The Utes (16-12, 2-4 MWC) continue home play against conference foe San Diego State on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
The Utes used nine runs off 10 hits and strong pitching by three freshmen to beat Southern Colorado. As they did yesterday, the Thunder Wolves scored two runs in the first inning to take the early 2-0 lead. A two-run shot over the right center wall by Donnie Saba helped the Utes take their first lead, 3-2 in the third. The T-Wolves were quick to answer, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth to regain the lead, 4-3.
In the Utah fourth, the lead flip-flopped again as the Utes posted their second three-run inning of the game. Matt Ciaramella started the offense after scoring on a wild pitch. Brandon Biesinger was next in line, driving home Jake Jordison on a triple to right center. Biesinger then scored on a balk to give the Utes the lead for good, 6-4.
Right center seemed to be the Utes target spot as Biesinger and Donald Hawes ripped identicle doubles to start off the sixth inning. Biesinger scored on Hawes' shot and Hawes eventually crossed the plate on another balk by the T-Wolves.
"We had a lot of guys, who haven't had many opportunities this season, take advantage of the two games and step it up and play well," said head coach Tim Esmay. "We needed the good pitching from our younger guys to help strengthen our depth."
Saba led the Utes with three RBI off his home run and Biesinger finished with two RBI off 3-of-4 hitting with two runs scored. Brady Martinez (1-0) picks up his first win in his first start on the mound. Martinez gave up five runs (four earned) off seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. Clay Westmoreland threw three scoreless innings for Utah and Jared Snyder allowed one run in 1.0 inning to round out the pitching effort.
