LAS VEGAS--The Utes remained winless in Mountain West Conference play after losing to UNLV on Friday night, 16-14. Utah's overall record drops to .500 (12-12) and its league record falls to 0-4. UNLV improves to 11-13 on the season and 1-3 in MWC play.
Utah continued to hit the ball well connecting for 19, but stranded 12 runners in the game. The heart breaker for Utah proved to be the fifth inning when UNLV exploded for 13 runs to take a 16-4 lead. The Utes answered with their own outpour of nine runs in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 16-13. Utah also added one more in the ninth, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
Seven Utes posted multiple hits to lead Utah's plate attack, led by Adam Castleton, Mike Basham and Matt Ciaramella with three apiece. Ciaramella banged out a home run and a finished with a team-high three RBI. Ryan Ruiz led the Rebels, going 4-of-6 with five RBI.
Jason Wylie (3-4) lost his fourth decision of the season. Wylie allowed six runs (five earned) while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work.
