Utes Even Series With Rebels

Las Vegas--Utah evened its Mountain West Conference series against UNLV on Saturday afternoon by winning game two, 8-6. Utah improves to 13-12 overall and 1-4 in MWC play. UNLV falls to 11-14, 1-4 in league play. The rebels beat Utah the day before, 16-14. The series concludes on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (PT).
The Utes used a four-run seventh to grab the lead (7-5) for good. UNLV put together its first rally in the bottom of the same inning. With the tying run on second, reliever Ryan Reisbeck made a great defensive play down the third base line and struck out the next batter to help himself out of a jam. Reisbeck then retired the Rebels one, two, three in the bottom of the eighth.
Adam Castleton added an insurance run for Utah when he homored in the top of the ninth to put the Utes up, 8-5. The Rebels put together their second rally in the final inning after a squeaker of the second baseman's glove and an error by the third baseman Mike Westfall left two runners on for UNLV. Reisbeck struck out the next batter he faced, but committed a balk to move the runners over to second and third. The runner on third then scored on a single to center field. Reisbeck was forced to leave the game because of an injury to his pitching arm after getting an 0-2 count on the batter with two outs. That UNLV batter hit a roller off Mitch Maio's pitch to Westfall, who redeemed himself for his error earlier in the inning by making the play to first.
For Utah, Nate Weese extended his hitting streak to 20 games after smacking out three singles and batting in one run. Castleton and Donnie Saba each knocked out a home run. Cheyenne Rushton (4-2) picks up his fourth win of the season. Mitch Maio (3-1-3) gets the save after throwing one pitch to retire the final batter.
