ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--Utah came up one run short against New Mexico on Sunday as it dropped game three, 13-12. The loss drops the Utes to 0-3 in the Mountain West Conference and 12-11 overall. New Mexico improves to 3-0 in conference play and 13-12 overall.
New Mexico opened the game with three runs off five hits in the bottom of the first and added three more in the second and five more in the third to take an 11-1 lead. Though the Lobos dominated the first couple innings, Utah slowly chipped away and almost overcame the Lobo lead. The Utes began their comeback in the fourth after Nate Weese and Mike Westfall homored (12-3). Donnie Saba doubled home Brett Baldwin to lead a three-run Utah charge in the fifth (12-6).
The Lobos added what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth off a Utah error and a sacrifice fly (13-6). Trailing 13-8, Utah staged a four-run rally in the ninth, but left runners stranded on second and third. Matt Ciaramella, Brett Baldwin, Adam Castleton and Saba each had an RBI single to lead the rally.
Mitch Maio (3-1) made his second start for Utah, but allowed nine runs (six earned) in 2.0 innings to pick up his first loss of the season. Brett Baldwin led Utah with four hits and Donnie Saba knocked in three runs off three hits for the Utes. Adam Castleton also had three hits with two RBI and two runs scored in the loss.
