ST. GEORGE--Utah pitcher Cheyenne Rushton picked up his first win of the season as the senior and Ute defense shutout Southern Utah, 5-0 on Friday afternoon. The right handed Rushton allowed just three hits and stuck out six batters in his first complete game as a Ute. Rushton redeemed himself of one of those hits by picking off the runner at first base. The Utes are now 8-6 on the season, while SUU falls to 0-14.
At the plate, Utah scored most of its runs in the first inning. Senior Adam Castleton led off the game with a home run on the first pitch. The Utes added two more runs in that same inning when Nate Weese scored on a wild pitch and Brit Pannier crossed homeplate after Jake Jordison hit an RBI ground out to the first baseman. The 3-0 score remained until the Utes added another run in the seventh off the Thunderbird's fourth error of the game.
In the Utah ninth, Castleton drove in his second run of the game after doubling off the left-center wall and scoring Donald Hawes from second (5-0). Castleton finished the day with three hits and two runs scored. Brit Pannier and Nate Weese extended their hitting streaks to nine games with a hit each.
The series conclusion will be played on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (MT).
