ST. GEORGE, Utah--Utah scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning as it defeated Southern Utah, 4-3 on Thursday night at Bruce Hurst Field. The win moves Utah to 7-6 on the season, while SUU falls to 0-13.
The Thunderbirds opened up a, 0-1 lead in bottom of the first, but Utah answered with a run of its own in the top of the second when Brit Pannier, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored on an infield single by Mike Basham (1-1). The Utes took their first lead of the game in the third inning when Donald Hawes scored from second base on a single by Adam Castleton.
Southern Utah added a run in the sixth and in the eighth to take a, 3-2 lead into the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth, Nate Weese drilled a home run off the first pitch of the inning to tie the game, 3-3. Brit Pannier followed the lead off homer with his second double of the game and then advanced to third on a wild pitch by SUU. Pannier would then score what proved to be the winning run off Mike Westfall's sacrifice fly to right field.
Jared Snyder (1-0) earned his first win of the season. Snyder faced six batters on the night and struck out the final two he faced. Jason Wylie started the game on the mound for Utah. Wylie pitched 7.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) off four hits while striking out seven. Rick White (0-2) pitched a complete game for the Thunderbirds, but gets the loss after allowing four runs.
