Utah Baseball Overwhelmed By Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz.-Utah continued to struggle on defense Friday night, committing four errors and yielding a 5-17 Arizona win. The loss drops the Utes to 1-4 on the season. Arizona remains undefeated at 5-0. The series wraps up tomorrow at 1:00 p.m (MT) at Sancet Field.
The Wildcats began their scoring frenzy in the second inning with two runs off a base hit and wild pitch. Utah cut the lead to 1-2 in the top of the third when Mike Basham, who had singled to left to lead off the inning, scored on a sacfrifice fly by Brett Baldwin. Arizona answered with eight runs off four hits, including a grand slam by John Hardy in the bottom of the third to build the lead to 1-10.
Arizona banged out another big inning with seven runs in the seventh. Utah tried to cut the lead by adding three more in the eighth, but it was too little too late.
Hardy led Arizona, finishing three-of-five with seven RBI. Joe Little improves to 2-0 on the season after earning the win. Little pitched seven innings and allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out nine batters.
Mike Basham and Mike Westfall had two hits each for the Utes. Basham also posted two RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored. Doug Mackay falls to 0-2 on the season after giving up six runs in 2.2 innings of work.
