GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.-The Utah Baseball Team dropped game two of its three-game series against Mesa State, 5-6, on Saturday. Utah falls to 5-6 on the season, while the Mavericks improve to 4-6. Utah beat Mesa State on Friday, 8-5. The series concludes Sunday at 12:00 p.m. (MT).
Trailing, 1-5, in the top of the ninth inning, the Utes staged a comeback that would tie, but not win the game. The four-run comeback was capped off when Adam Castleton, who had reached base after being hit by the pitcher, scored on Brit Pannier's sacrifice fly to left field. Utah added three more runs to tie the score at, 5-5, heading into the final inning. The tie didn't hold though as Deke DeCrow single to center field in the bottom of the ninth scoring the winning run and giving the Mavericks a, 5-6, victory.
For the Utes, Mike Basham drove in two runs while going 1-of-3 from the plate and scoring a run. Brit Pannier, Brandon Biesinger and Jake Jordison had an RBI each for the game.
Cheyenne Rushton started the game for Utah, but was relieved after pitching 5.2 innings and allowing five runs. Sean Overholt (0-3) threw 3.0 scoreless innings, but gave up the game-winning RBI to earn the loss. Mike Stromenger (1-1) gets the win for Mesa State after retiring the only batter he faced on the night.
