TUCSON, Ariz.-The Arizona Wildcats remained undefeated as they beat Utah, 0-3, on Friday night at Sancet Field. The loss drops Utah to 1-3 on the season and leaves the Wildcats at a perfect 4-0 for the young season. In the latest Baseball Weekly/ESPN Top 25 College Coaches' Poll, Arizona was ranked as a Top 40 team.
The Wildcats struck first in the second inning off an RBI single to center field, and scored another run (0-2) in the third inning as the Utes continued to struggle on defense, committing two errors. The third and final run came in the fifth, leaving the score 0-3.
For Utah, Nate Weese was one-of-five players with a base hit on the night. The first baseman has posted one hit or more in each of the Utes' four games this season.
Arizona posted just one more run than the Utes (6), but the three runs were the difference. Richard Mercado led the Wildcats, going two-of-four and scoring one run. Pitcher Sean Rierson improves to 2-0 on the season after earning the win. Rierson allowed four hits and struck out four batters in 6.0 innings.
Jason Wylie (1-1) was credited with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings of work. A bright note for the Utes, is Wylie and Jared Snyder shutdown Arizona hitter Moises Duran. Duran was 7-10 with 10 RBI and eight runs scored in his previous three games entering Friday night. The Wildcat finished 0-for-4 with no runs scored against the Utes.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. (MT) at Sancet Field.
