PROVO, Utah - After several missed shot opportunities, the Utes' (12-2-3, 4-1-1 MWC) came through with a solo goal to advance past Wyoming and move on to the semifinal round of the Mountain West Conference tournament. Utah will take on New Mexico Thursday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. at South Field in Provo, Utah.
It was senior forward Shauna Gurr-Bingham that saved the day with her unassisted 10-yard blast that caught the left corner of the net. The decisive play developed with a little over two minutes left in regulation off a free kick that was blocked by goalkeeper Lori Scheider. The ball was then deflected back to Gurr-Bingham whom wasted no time scoring her eighth goal of the season. Gurr-Bingham contributed in the game with 10 shots with five of those shots being shot-on-goal attempts.
Wyoming's well played and physical defense prevented the Utes from blowing the game wide open. Utah outshot the Cowgirls 14-2 in the first half and 16-4 in the second. The Utes maintained control of the ball throughout the game and had many excellent chances to score, but were unable to find the back of the net until late in the second half.
In the first half, junior midfielder Amber Brower beat her defender and fired a shot past an extended Scheider. The shot was headed into the goal until Wyoming's Renee Minero made a spectacular play by rushing in and deflecting the shot. Later in the game, Gurr-Bingham's corner kick connected with Julie Herdic whom fired a five-yard shot that was denied by Scheider.
The second half was much like the first as the frustrated Utes continued their offensive pressure. Within the 38th minute of the second half, junior Missy Dennis broke away from the Cowgirl's defense and went head to head with goalkeeper Scheider. The junior forward blazed an 8-yard shot that ended as another save for Wyoming's keeper.
Goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay-Kimball was credited with the shutout after finishing with one save. Scheider performed very well, while coming away with 14 saves in the contest.
Utah will meet the Lobos of New Mexico in the MWC semifinals. The Lobos are coming off a win against Air Force, 1-0. The game will be held Thursday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. at South Field in Provo, Utah. The Utes last run in with New Mexico ended in a 0-0 tie.
