SALT LAKE CITY - Senior defender Maren Harper was named to the Verizon Academic All-America first team. The team was announced Monday, Nov. 25, and consists of 11 first-team candidates. The Sacramento, Calif., native was one of four defenders to make the academic first team. Harper is currently upholding a 4.0 GPA while majoring in political science.
The Ute senior started in all 16 games on defense for Utah which earned its first berth to the NCAA Tournament. She has played and started in 70 contests since her freshman season. Harper was also named first-team all-Mountain West Conference this season. The 5-6 senior is currently the vice president of Utah's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Here are some of Harper's accomplishments from her first three seasons at Utah. Harper was named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America third team ... also named to Verizon All-District VIII team in 2001 ... selected three-time academic all-Mountain West ... voted Utah Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 ... also received Ute academic excellence award.
Academically it's been difficult," remarks Harper. "But the support from my family, coaches, teammates and advisors has helped me achieve this honor."
