SALT LAKE CITY - Utah (11-1-3, 4-0-1 MWC) continues its success against UNLV (10-6-1, 2-3 MWC), Saturday afternoon at Ute Field. With this win, Utah is assured no less then second-place in the Mountain West Conference.
The Utes' tenacious defense played exceptionally well as Utah allowing only two shots in the contest. Jen Williams, Maren Harper, Tracy Stratton and Megan Maxwell in the backfield, kept the Rebels out of the game as Utah controlled the ball throughout the game. The Utes outshot UNLV 12-0 in the first half and 11-2 in the second. Junior goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay-Kimball grabbed one save, while Jenna Huff snagged 10 saves.
Utah racked up goals from Missy Dennis, Lauren Field, Bobbie Benegas and Katie Tate. Dennis' break-away goal came at the 26:52 mark to put Utah up early. This goal marked Dennis' eighth of the season. With a little over a minute left in the first half, sophomore Lauren Field blazed one past keeper Huff to put the Utes up 2-0 before going into halftime.
In the second half, Utah continued to put on the offensive pressure. Junior Bobbie Benegas increased the Utes lead in the 76th minute as her 30-yard shot sailed into the lower-left corner of the net. Later in the game, senior forward Katie Tate made her mark with her fifth goal of the season. Tate's goal was reflected off a UNLV defender to finish the game at 4-0.
Next week, the Utes will face arch-rival BYU for outright bragging rights and the MWC championship. Utah has never defeated BYU dating back since the women's soccer program was established. Last season, the Cougars shutout the Utes in a 3-0 victory. This bout with BYU will be played Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1:00 p.m. on Ute Field. This match will be the Utes' final game of the regular season before entering the MWC tournament.
