No. 22 Utah Volleyball Team Nets Second Straight Conference Sweep

SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 22 University of Utah women's volleyball team (16-6, 6-3) got their second sweep in two days tonight, beating UNLV 30-21, 30-22, 30-15 at Crimson Court and winning for the 28th consecutive time at home. Utah out-blocked the Rebels 16-5 and hit for .287 compared to the -.049 of UNLV.
Game one started out close, but Utah took its first lead at 8-7 and led for the rest of the game, winning by nine points. The Utes hit for .333 compared to the .108 of the Rebels. Sophomores Sabine Schulz and Lyndsey Phillips had four kills apiece to lead Utah. Schulz also had a team-high four digs.
UNLV jumped out to an early lead in game two, but Utah tied it at six and pulled away, winning by eight points. Utah only hit for .132, but held the Rebels to -.054. Senior Sylva Strzinkova led the Utes with four kills on the game.
Utah dominated game three, jumping out to an 8-1 lead and never looking back. At one point, the Utes led by 16 points. Utah hit for .433 on the game, while the Rebels hit for -.241. Junior Kim Turner had seven kills and six blocks on the game.
"We played really, really well this weekend," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "We worked a lot this week on mixing things up offensively and it showed. We created what we did this weekend."
Turner led the Utes with 13 kills and 10 blocks, her seventh double-double of the season, and hit for .550. Strzinkov? finished with nine kills, while Phillips had seven. Phillips also tied a career-high with nine blocks. Schulz led the Utes with 10 digs, while sophomore setter Kelsie Kartchner finished with 34 assists.
UP NEXT: The Utes host Utah State for a 7:00 p.m. match on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Crimson Court. Next weekend, Utah travels to Air Force and New Mexico. "Every match is important from here on out," Launiere said.
