SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.-The Utes dropped their second straight game (8-13) to Cal Poly SLO on Sunday, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Utah falls to 1-2 on the season, while Cal Poly improves to 5-1-1.
Utah started the game strong, scoring four runs in the first inning. Lead off batter Adam Castleton was the first base runner for the Utes, after being hit by a Gregy Bochy pitch. Donnie Saba, Nate Weese and Brit Pannier followed up with singles and then Mike Westfall doubled down the left field line leaving the Utes on top 4-0.
The second inning proved to be the turning point in the game as Cal Poly exploded for 10 runs off eight hits and two Utah errors. The Utes chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the third and seventh inning, and two runs in the ninth. The comeback wasn't enough as the Utes stranded seven runners in the game, including two in the ninth.
Ute Pitcher Sean Overholt (0-1) was credited with the loss after allowing 10 runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings of work. The Mustang's Bochy earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the season.
The Utes face Pac-10 powerhouse Arizona on Feb. 1 in Tucson, Ariz., at 3:00 p.m. (PT).
