SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.-The Utah Baseball team wrapped up its first win of the season against Cal Poly SLO, 6-4, on Friday night. The Utes are now 1-0 in nonconference play and Cal Poly falls to 3-1-1.
The Utes took the lead early and never looked back as they scored five runs in the first two innings. In the first, Utah jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Nate Weese hit a two-run double to right field and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Westfall. The Utes added two more runs in the second (5-0) when Donald Hawes scored on Weese's sac fly. Cal Poly cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth, but it wasn't enough for the win.
Starting pitcher Jason Wylie earned the win for the Utes. Wylie (1-0) allowed two hits and one earned run, while striking out five batters in five innings of work. Releif pitcher Mitch Maio sealed the game for Utah, earning his first save of the season. Maio struck out both Bryan Gant and Bill Saul in the ninth inning, leaving two runners stranded for the Mustangs.
