SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah Baseball team beat New Mexico 7-6 at Franklin Covey Field on May 10. Utah improves to 25-26, 13-15 MWC and New Mexico falls to 23-31, 13-15 MWC on the season. The Mountain West Conference contest continues Friday, May 11 at 5 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field.
Utah scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Chris Shelton singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second after the short stop booted Sam Swenson's hit for an error. Shelton scored on a single by Brit Pannier. Swenson scored on a double play ball hit by Mike Westfall.
New Mexico tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third inning. Utah added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning off a home run by Sam Swenson. But New Mexico matched it with one in the top of the fifth to tie it up at 3-3.
The Utes added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead 6-3. Tommy Maestas and Donald Hawes singled. Maestas scored on a single by Donny Saba, Hawes scored on a single by Adam Castleton and Saba scored on a single by Nate Weese.
New Mexico once again matched the Utes by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to tie it at 6-6. The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when Swenson scored on a balk by New Mexico pitcher Marvin Wong.
For the Utes, Maestas had two hits and Swenson scored three runs. Matt McAfee earns the win for Utah after coming in during the sixth inning. McAfee improves to 1-2 on the season. Travis Palmer started the game for the Utes. Palmer gave up six runs (five earned), six hits and three walks in 5.1 innings of work. Chris Cooper gets the loss for the Lobos. He falls to 6-6 on the season.
