SALT LAKE CITY--Senior night was spoiled as the University of Utah dropped the second game of it's three-game series against New Mexico 6-8 on May 11 at Franklin Covey Field. Utah falls to 25-27, 13-16 MWC and New Mexico improves to 24-31, 14-15 MWC. Utah trails New Mexico by one game in the MWC standings. If the Utes win Saturday, May 12, it wins the tiebreaker having taken 4-of-6 games from the Lobos.
Ryan Bailey started the game for Utah, but was razzled early as he gave up a home run on the second pitch of the game. Utah jumped ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning after Chris Shelton doubled to drive in two runs. The Utes added two more in the bottom of the second off Josh France's two-run homer. But the Lobos added runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to lead 7-4. Utah added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Donnie Saba hit a home run. New Mexico matched the run in the top of the seventh to lead 8-5. Utah added one more run in the bottom of the seventh when Mike Westfall grounded to short scoring Sam Swenson.
For the Utes, Donnie Saba went 4-for-5 from the plate, with one RBI and two runs scored. Chris Shelton and France added two RBIs each. Ryan Bailey gets the loss after allowing six runs, 11 hits and three walks. He falls to 7-5 on the season. Atencio picks up his first win of the season for the Lobos.
The final game of the MWC contest will be played Saturday, May 12 at Franklin Covey Field at 12:00 p.m.
