SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team boosts its season and conference records to 17-22 and 8-9, respectively, after defeating San Diego State 12-4 today. The Utes dominated the game scoring 12 runs on 12 hits with two errors, while leaving the Aztecs to four runs on seven hits with two errors.
The Aztecs started the game scoring one run in the first inning. Utah answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a double by Sam Swenson and a triple by Nate Weese. San Diego State tied the game in the second inning, but the Utes pulled ahead scoring five runs to lead the contest 7-2 at the end of four innings. Utah continued its batting birrage scoring one run in the sixth and four in the seventh. San Diego State was only able to pick up two runs in the top of the eighth to end the game with a 4-12 deficit.
Nate Weese led the Utes at the plate, the first baseman was 4-of-5 scoring three runs and six RBI. He hit three doubles and one triple in the game - just one triple shy of tying the Utah record. Weese is on a hitting streak for the Utes going 8-of-9 in the last two games. In the Utes' 15-10 victory over Southern Utah, he logged a perfect batting average hitting three home runs, including a grand slam, and a double to score 10 RBI in the game. Weese leads the Utes with nine home runs, 43 RBI and five triples. He has a .325 batting average.
Junior Sam Swenson has 2-of-6 hitting his 17th double of the year. He leads the team with 51 hits and is second for the Utes with a .338 batting average. He scored two runs and one RBI in the contest.
Sophomore catcher Donald Hawes hit his fifth home run of the season with a solo shot to left field.
Second baseman Adam Castleton tied the Utah base on balls record. The sophomore earned only one at bat in the game, hitting a double, while taking four base on balls. He ranks second in the conference with 34 walks. Castleton scored four runs for the Utes in the game.
Senior Jared Cavaness earns the win for Utah pitching 8.0 innings. The win boosts his record to 4-5 with a 4.76 ERA. Cavaness faced 36 batters allowed seven hits and four runs. He leads the Utes with 37 strikeouts.
The Utes and the Aztecs continue the three-game conference series with a single game tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., at Franklin Covey Field.
