ALBUQUERQUE - The University of Utah women's soccer team (7-5-1) lost its conference opener to New Mexico (6-6) 1-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos' victory marked only the second ever over the Utes. The decisive tally came in the 67th minute when Tara Alarid took a lob, out ran two Ute defenders and booted it in from the top of the box. Lobo goalkeeper Shelly Hammock recorded her fourth shutout of the season, as she turned back seven shots. She received help from defenders to preserve the shutout. Utah had a couple corner kicks denied by the UNM defense, including a Shauna Gurr shot from ten feet out that had the goaltender beat, but wound up blocked. The shot would have given Utah a late first half lead. Utah had a late onslaught in the second half, composing eight shots on goal and seven corner kicks, but just couldn't muster a score. "We played very well," said Coach Amy Winslow. "The ball didn't bounce in our favor. They had a couple of saves off line on corners by defenders. It just wasn't our day." Utah will try to regroup for its first Mountain West Conference win against No. 23 Brigham Young Sat., Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. at Ute Field.
