SALT LAKE CITY -- In a heated game resulting in 18 fouls and one yellow card, the Utah women's soccer team opened its 1999 season with a 3-2 victory over Idaho State. The Bengals had 12 fouls while the Utes had six and one yellow card was given to Alli Cerruti.
While Idaho State outshout the Utes 15-12, Utah came away with the victory. Senior Forward Staci Burt scored the first Ute goal under the five minute mark from an assist by Mondis Ariazand. She then came back to score again ten minutes later on a feed from junior centerfielder Tonya Dansreau. Utah finished out its scoring streak with a goal by sophomore midfielder Amy Kofoed assisted by freshman Sandi Fouts.
Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Hills had seven saves allowing two goals. At the 46:00 minute mark, IDSU forward Alicia Buchanan rebounded a shot off the post for a goal. Nikkie Hitchcock and Ashley May paired up for Idaho State's second goal.
The win brings Utah to a 1-0 record as they head into their next game against Kansas on Fri., Sept. 3 at 5:00 p.m.
