SALT LAKE CITY - Kapu Elkington, a 6-1 middle blocker who has played the last two years at the University of Hawai'i, has announced that she is transferring to the University of Utah. Elkington will join Beth Launiere's team this fall as a junior, and will be able to play immediately under the NCAA's one-time transfer rule.
Elkington played in 37 matches and 50 games for the nationally-ranked Rainbow Wahine 1996-97, used sparingly as a middle hitter, outside hitter and back row player. She is a native of Laie, Oahu, and graduated from Kamehameha Schools.
"We recruited Kaupu out of high school, and had we gotten her at the time she would have been one of the biggest recruits we had ever signed," says Launiere. "We're delighted to have her. As deep as the talent pool is in Hawai'i's program, it isn't uncommon for a player of Kapu's abilities to still have a tough time getting a lot of playing time. With us, she'll be able to challenge for playing time right away at middle blocker or outside hitter."
Elkington is one of four newcomers to the Utah volleyball team this year. However, Launiere also welcomes back five starters and seven letterwinners from the 1997 squad that went 22-9.
