UTAH TOURNAMENT TID-BITS:
Utah is one of 10 teams making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA
Tournament ... The Utes are one of the 34 at-large selections. Thirty
teams were granted automatic qualification by virtue of winning their
conference championship ... Utah is one of six Western Athletic
Conference teams to receive an NCAA Tournament bid. Also advancing from
the WAC are conference champion Hawai'i, Brigham Young, Colorado State,
Fresno State and San Jose State ... The WAC, Big Ten and Big 12 each had
six teams receive NCAA bids.
SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE:
The Redbirds are in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year and
for the 11th time in 17 years, owning a 2-10 record in the tournament.
Earning one of the 34 at-large bids, Illinois State (22-9) lost in the
championship match of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament to
Northern Iowa in three games on Nov. 21, and posted a 16-2 record during
regular-season play in the MVC. Last Friday and Saturday, ISU played
three games at Long Beach State's Thanksgiving Tournament, losing to UC
Santa Barbara and Long Beach State in three games and defeating Oregon
in three games.
Julie Morgan has a 354-174 record in her 16th season as a head coach and a 294-127 in her 13th season at ISU. Illinois State is led by a pair of first-team all-MVC players making their third straight NCAA appearance. Senior setter Marisa Brickley is the Missouri Valley Conference's career assists leader and senior outside hitter Michelle Kutcher is among the league's top 10 in career kills and hitting percentage. Brickley, the 1997 MVC Player of the Year, is averaging 12.92 assists per game and is second on the team in digs (2.36) this season. Kutcher leads ISU in both kills (4.11) and digs (2.51). The Redbirds were 2-9 against the NCAA Tournament field this year, having beaten Notre Dame and Pepperdine while losing to Northern Iowa (three times), Colorado State, Sacramento State, Northern Illinois, Illinois, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara.
UTAH/ILLINOIS STATE TIES:
Redbirds head coach Julie Morgan directed the Utah program from
1984-86, posting a 60-47 record before leaving for Illinois State. Ann
Bricker was the head coach for three years before current Ute head coach
Beth Launiere arrived in 1990, leaving the Ute program in disarray. The
Utes were 1-32 the season before Launiere took over. Morgan and Launiere
became acquaintances after Morgan took over at Illinois State and
Launiere was an assistant coach at Illinois (1988-89). Both have worked
together on the AVCA's All-America Committee.
Illinois State senior middle blocker Jen Olson (formerly known as Jen Hoffman) is a native of Nibley, Utah, and graduated from Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum, Utah. Olson transfered to Illinois State from Concordia (Calif.) College.

The Cornhuskers are ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/AVCA Poll released on

automatic berth and is one of the four No. 1 seeds in the tournament.
Nebraska is making its 17th appearance, missing the field just once
since the tournament's inception in 1991, and has a 35-15 record in NCAA
Tournament play.
Nebraska won the Big 12 title with a 19-1 record. It's only loss all season came at 18th-ranked Texas A&M in five games on Nov. 20. Since then, NU has posted three-game wins at No. 12 Texas (Nov. 21) and against No. 17 Colorado (Nov. 25) and No. 21 Kansas State (Nov. 28) at home.
The Cornhuskers are led by All-America candidates Megan Korver, Nancy Meendering and Jaime Krondak. The Ute volleyball team was well represented as the Western Athletic
Conference coaches selected their 1998 postseason award winners on Nov.
17. Three Utah players earned all-conference recognition in the Pacific
Division.
Sophomore outside hitter Kalani Tonga was named first-team all-WAC. Tonga, who was named the WAC Mountain Division Freshman of the Year in 1997, put up fantastic numbers once again this year despite switching positions from middle blocker. The Allen, Texas, native ranks fourth in the WAC in kills (4.17 kpg) and seventh in digs (3.00 dpg) this season. Tonga also has 63 blocks, 28 service aces and hit a team-best .272 percentage during the conference season to rank 17th in the WAC.
Ute sophomore Lucie Turkov was named first-team all-WAC defensive specialist. Turkov, a native of Brno, Czech Republic, and a graduate of Taylorsville (Utah) High School, has the third-most digs on the team (2.51 dpg) and 19 aces in '98
Senior outside hitter Sara Shakula was named second-team all-WAC for the third consecutive season. Launiere was named the Utes' head coach in 1990, and has since overseen a significant transformation in the Ute volleyball program. The season prior to Launiere's appointment, the Utes compiled a meager 1-32 record. Four years later, Launiere guided Utah to a 25-win season, its most successful campaign ever.
The Grand Rapids, Mich., native has led the Utes to four 20-win seasons and five upper-division finishes in the Western Athletic Conference during the last six years, including four in a row. Last year, Launiere's Utes posted its all-time best overall winning percentage in school history (.710) by going 22-9, as well as the best winning percentage in WAC play (.643) with a 9-5 mark to place fourth in the WAC Mountain Division. QUOTING LAUNIERE:
On making the NCAA Tournament - "I'm really excited. It's just a great
feeling. It's something you work so hard for the whole year. We had a
lot of question marks at the beginning of the season. And we really
responded and had a great season."
"I'm pleased for the program and the players who came before this group. I've been thinking about them a lot the past few days. There has been a lot of people who worked a lot of hard hours to get us to this point."
If this is her best team ever - "I think it is. It's hard to compare, but I do think we have more tools than we've had in the pastmore people we can go to. It's the best defensive team we've had for sure."
On playing Illinois State - "I anticipate that they're going to be well trained, and that they'll have a lot of size. I like the matchup, though I think the strength of schedule we had will really help us."
