TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Utah softball team split in its season opening doubleheader at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, dropping a 3-1 pitcher's dual to No. 7 Texas, then regrouping to upset No. 21 Florida State, 5-2.
The Utes ironed out first game jitters by scoring two runs in each of the third and fourth innings against the Seminoles, as Kristin Arbogast earned the victory on the mound holding FSU's bats at bay. The Ute sticks were led by Sunny Smith's double and two RBIs, while Amberly Johnson also drove in a pair of runs. Lisa Hashimoto tripled in the Utes' win.
Lack of offensive fire power spoiled a good outing by pitcher Sarah Farnworth against the Longhorns. Farnworth surrendered only three runs, but a Smith blast into the seats in the seventh was all the run support she would receive. Utah takes the diamond tomorrow in day two of the Fiesta Bowl tournament at 11:00 a.m. against No. 19 Alabama, followed by a showdown with No. 3 UCLA at 3:30 p.m.
