Ute Play
The Utah women's soccer team travels to San Diego, Calif., to play the San Diego State Aztecs on Thurs., Oct. 14 at 1:00 p.m. The Utes then travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to take-on UNLV Sat., Oct. 16 at 6:00 p.m.
Ute Notes
The Utes are 1-1 in Mountain West Conference action. Utah defeated New Mexico Oct. 6 in a 1-0 contest, but fell to Brigham Young 1-0 on Oct. 9. The Utes are 8-5 overall.
In the stats column, Utah has outshot its opponents 243-182 and outscored the competition 22-16.
Utes to Watch
Freshman Shauna Gurr was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 4-8. Gurr scored two goals last weekend as the Utes split their two matches, defeating Weber State 3-0 and falling to SMU 2-1.
The forward helped the Utes in their victory over Weber State when she slammed a pass from defender Megan Maxwell for a 20-yard goal. Against SMU, Gurr brought the Utes back into the game with an unassisted goal to tie the score 1-1.
Overall, Gurr is third on the team with four goals and eight points.
Midfielder Amy Kofoed leads the Utes with nine goals and 18 points. The sophomore was named the MWC Player of the Week (Sept. 19-25). Senior Staci Burt is second on the team with five goals, three assists and 13 points.
Goalkeeper Courtney Hills is 8-5, including four overtime games. The freshman has played 1,227 minutes allowed 16 goals and has 84 saves. She also has four shutouts.
Recent Results
The Utah women's soccer team thrashed New Mexico in a 1-0 contest. The Utes outshot the Lobos 27-8, including 14 shots-on-goal. Senior Staci Burt slammed Utah's game-winner. In the 42nd minute, freshman forward Kim Naylor pounded a shot that was blocked by the Lobo keeper, Burt gathered the deflected ball for the goal.
The Utes weren't so lucky against in-state rival Brigham Young. The Cougars defeated the Utes 1-0 when senior Maren Hendershot sped through the Utah defense for a breakaway shot.
Scouting the Opponents
San Diego State is 9-4 overall with a 2-0 Mountain West record. The Aztecs boast conference wins over Air Force (2-0) and Wyoming (6-0). The Aztecs are ranked 10th in the NSCAA West Region. Last year, SDSU was 19-3-1 with a 6-0 Western Athletic Conference record. The Aztecs were the 1998 WAC Champions. In the Utah-San Diego State series, SDSU leads 2-1.
UNLV is 6-5-1 and 1-1 in conference play. In the Mountain West, UNLV owns a 3-2 win over Wyoming and a 6-0 loss to Air Force. Last season, the Rebels were 8-10-1 with a 1-4-1 Western Athletic Conference record and a seventh-place finish in the WAC Pacific Division. In series play, UNLV leads 1-0.
