SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Utah baseball team fell to UC Santa Barbara, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Utah was unable to keep pace as the Gauchos used a four-run fifth inning to pull away and secure the win.
The Utes got on the board in the fourth inning. After back-to-back baserunners reached,
Jake Long brought home Utah's first run on a fielder's choice to cut into an early deficit. Utah added another run in the eighth when
Matt Flaharty came around to score on another fielder's choice driven in by
Cameron Gurney.
Utah finished with five hits on the afternoon.
Matt Flaharty,
Jake Long,
Bradley Navarro,
Jet Gilliam and
Derek Smith each recorded a hit, while Long and
Cameron Gurney were credited with RBIs.
Colter McAnelly (1-2) took the loss after allowing three runs over four innings of work. He struck out four and walked three.
Landon Salvesen came out of the bullpen, and
Demitri Diamant added three innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
UC Santa Barbara built its lead with a run in the first and two more in the second before breaking the game open in the fifth. The Gauchos totaled nine hits in the contest.
