OKLAHOMA CITY - Despite a stirring seventh-inning comeback, the University of Utah softball team was eliminated from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon as the result of a 7-5 loss to the UCF Knights at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
Utah finishes 2025 with a final record of 13-40.
"This team never stops believing," said coach
Amy Hogue, "and, once again, we got something going and before you know it, we're tied. I'm really proud of the fact that that's part of who we are. It's part of what they stood true to. They didn't stop believing in themselves even though it was a really tough year and a tough loss today."
The Knights got the scoring started in the first inning, using two walks, a single and a hit batter to take a 1-0 lead. Three more runs crossed the plate for the Knights in the third, thanks to a bases-loaded walk and two-run single off the bat of Madison Simon, and Utah's deficit increased to 5-0 in the fifth.
The Utes finally sprung to life on offense in the seventh, roaring back to tie the score. A hit, a walk and two more singles tallied the first run and
Taylor Jacobs drew the second free pass of the inning with the bases loaded to make the score 5-2. After the Knights recorded the second out, an error kept the rally alive and plated the third run of the inning.
Kaylah Nelsen then struck the final blow, punching a two-run single into left that drew Utah level.
Unfortunately for the Utes, they were unable to finish the rally by bringing in the go-ahead run and a two-run UCF home run in the bottom of the stanza ended the contest.
"We came into the game without a doubt," said senior outfielder
Shelbi Ortiz, "and throughout the game, we played until that very last out. I think that perfectly describes who we are as a team."
