HOUSTON – The Utah baseball team fell to Houston in a pair of Big 12 Conference games on Saturday at Schroeder Park, being edged 5-4 in the afternoon before dropping a 7-3 contest.
Game 1 was a continuation of Friday's series opener, which was suspended in the seventh inning due to inclement weather. The nightcap took place as the originally-scheduled middle game of the series.
Game 1
Houston 5, Utah 4
Utah led by a 4-2 score when the game was suspended on Friday in the seventh inning, but Houston rallied for three runs in the ninth to take the walk-off triumph.
Colter McAnelly left in line for the win, dealing five innings of two-run ball. He struck out six Cougars during his outing, bringing McAnelly to 85 K's on the season. It ties the sophomore for fifth-most in Utah's recorded program history.
Houston got an early lead with a run in each of the first two innings. But Utah pulled back even in the fifth—sending seven batters to the plate.
Santino Panaro ripped a laser into left field for an RBI single to score
Cameron Gurney, then
Derek Smith would score on a groundout from
Austen Roellig.
Drake Digiorno would put the Utes ahead in the sixth with an infield single, scoring
Tyler Quinn from second base. In the seventh,
Matt Flaharty brought in an insurance run on a sac fly to bring in Smith and give Utah a 4-2 lead.
In the home half of the seventh, Houston put two runners on with one out before lightning entered the area and suspended the game. When the teams returned on Saturday afternoon,
Merit Jones (2-6) took the hill and ended the inning with a pair of groundouts; it was part of five straight batters retired.
Houston rallied in the ninth for the win with four hits and a pair of walks.
Game 2
Houston 7, Utah 3
Five Utes had multi-hit performances, led by three apiece from
Santino Panaro and
Cameron Gurney. Gurney was a home run short of the cycle. But Houston plated the final four runs of the night to take the middle game of the series.
Panaro extended his hitting streak to six straight games while
Kaden Carpenter extended his on-base streak to eight consecutive contests.
Utah jumped out to a 2-0 lead after half an inning of play, knocking in a pair on first-pitch singles from Gurney and
Jake Long. Houston answered with one run in the bottom of the frame as the Utes remained ahead 2-1.
The clubs traded runs as the middle innings arrived, with Houston pulling ahead 3-2 after three innings.
Tyler Quinn gave the Utes an equalizer in the top of the fourth, clubbing a solo shot for his fourth home run of the season.
Houston would pull back in front with a run in the home half of the fourth, adding insurance with a pair in the sixth and one more in the eighth.
Utah had chances for more with doubles in the fourth from Gurney and Long but a double play thwarted the opportunity for the Utes. Gurney also tripled in the seventh but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
