Utes and Cougars to play one last time on Sunday
PROVO, Utah – The University of Utah softball team was defeated, 10-8, by the BYU Cougars on Friday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Gail Miller Field in Provo, Utah.
Utah is now 12-33 in 2025 and 4-13 in conference.
The first six innings were a pitcher's duel, with Utah's Hailey Maestretti and BYU's Kate Dahle keeping both offenses at bay. The Utes used three singles to dent home plate in the top of the first, the last one a two-run knock off the bat of Emily Capobianco.
In BYU's half of the first, a two-out RBI hit cut Utah's lead in half, but Maestretti kept her team's slim lead intact by getting Maddi Udall-Woolley to line out to third with the bases loaded. The Cougars packed the sacks again in the second, this time with one out, but Utah's starter used a fielder's choice and a strikeout to escape that jam unscathed.
Both offenses woke up in the seventh, starting with a six-run Utah rally that included an RBI triple courtesy of Sianni Sakai, a run-scoring single from Kendall Lundberg and a pinch-hit RBI double off the bat of Kayla Lyon that extended the Utes' lead to 8-1. Unfortunately for the visitors, BYU rallied for nine runs in their half of the seventh to earn the victory.

The Utes and Cougars will close out the series on Saturday, with an affair that will start at 1:30 p.m.
